Magen King, Donna Lee talk midlife reinvention, motherhood
BASTROP — Two nationally touring comedians are bringing their co-headlining show to Film Alley this weekend — marking both the duo’s rising momentum and Bastrop’s expanding entertainment scene.
The “Not Our First Rodeo” show Nov. 15 features comedians Magen King and Donna Lee, who built their tour around themes of midlife reinvention, motherhood and the realities of being women in a male-dominated industry. Drawing from personal stories, they said their show blends clean, relatable humor with an authentic perspective rarely seen on the club circuit, particularly in Central Texas “We’re about the same age, we have kiddos, and we’re in the same stage of life — revamping, starting over and really focusing 100% on comedy,” Lee said. “We are not doing anything now but full-time comedy, and that’s kind of new for both of us.”
Both comedians bring established careers to the tour. King has appeared on The CW and earned the Best in Fest award at the Burbank Comedy Festival, while Lee was a finalist on Nick at Nite’s “Search for the Funniest Mom in America.”
The pair said the accolades helped shape their reputations, but their growing following has come largely from consistent live performances.
“We are two women touring together — I haven’t seen that happen very often, unless they’re podcasters,” King said. “We’re two comedians with our own careers that just really like each other, and we wanted to be successful outside of waiting for clubs to book you.”
King and Lee said “Not Our First Rodeo” aims to highlight women’s voices in comedy and showcase perspectives that aren’t often represented.
“Women of a certain age — there’s just not a lot of representation of that in comedy, especially in Austin,” King said.
Bastrop’s entertainment scene continues to develop a diverse nightlife and attract film studios, and the duo said they’re excited to connect with a varied audience.
“It would be such a cool mix of people if it’s rural people and also tech and movie industry,” King said. “It’d be such an eclectic variance.”
After Bastrop, the tour continues to Tulsa, San Antonio and beyond as part of a nationwide run. A Netflix special is a dream, they said, but for now, they’re focused on building a partnership that feels fun and right.
“Our partnership has been one of the best things that’s ever happened to me,” Lee said.
