The Elgin Wildcats (1-8, 1-5 in district) varsity football team fell 49-7 to the Pflugerville Connally Cougars (5-4, 3-3) in district play Friday night.
Senior utility player Michael Mejias was once again the lone scorer for the Wildcats, continuing his role as the team’s most consistent offensive threat.
Connally jumped out to an early 14-0 lead in the first quarter, scoring on an 11-yard rushing touchdown and a 15-yard pass. The Cougars extended their lead midway through the second quarter on a seven-yard quarterback scramble by Jase Watkins.
Minutes later, the Wildcats’ defense gave up a 74-yard touchdown pass to make it 28-0 heading into halftime.
Elgin’s offense struggled to sustain drives in the first half, as starting quarterback Trey Flores was limited to just 14 passing yards before the break. The Wildcats found some momentum early in the third quarter when Flores connected with Mejias for a 14yard touchdown, cutting the deficit to 28-7.
Connally quickly responded with a 46-yard touchdown pass to regain control and added two more scores in the fourth quarter — a threeyard rushing touchdown and a 25yard pass — to close out the win.
Sophomore running back Dae’Ron Taylor led Elgin’s ground attack with 70 rushing yards, while the team totaled 130 yards on the ground.
The Wildcats have averaged 19.5 points per game this season.
Despite being out of postseason contention, Elgin will look to finish the season on a high note when it hosts Navarro during Senior Night Friday, Nov. 7, at 7:30 p.m.
