$1.7M in road repairs greenlit

Bastrop to see street work, closures and detours

BASTROP — Longawaited repairs to some of the Bastrop’s most damaged roads are expected to begin next month, according to officials.

City Council Oct. 14 approved a $1.7 million construction contract with Texas Materials Group Inc. The project includes street rehabilitation on Linden, Farm, Water and Childers streets and will be completed in two phases.

“There will be a lot of detours. There will be a lot of streets randomly closed,” Assistant City Manager Andres Rosales said. “We’re going to put a schedule together, we’re going to try to adhere to the street closure schedule.”

The work will involve removing seven inches of pavement with a milling machine, replacing it with five inches of asphalt and two inches of a finer road surface. The project is expected to take about six months, though officials said delays could occur due to utility relocation or unstable ground.

“Understand, these are old streets — we may get in there and they find something that could take a lot longer,” Rosales said.

Texas Materials Group was the lowest of six bidders at just under $1.7 million. The next lowest bid came in about $500,000 higher, and the highest bid was just over $2.7 million.

City Manager Sylvia Carrillo-Trevino said the lower-than-expected bids will leave funds available to add sidewalks where they are missing.

“Understand, these are old streets — we may get in there and they find something that could take a lot longer.”
