Playing at Wildcat Stadium last week came naturally for Bastrop running back Gary Jefferson Jr.

The senior suited up in Wildcat purple before transferring to the Bears this fall. Jefferson rushed for a game-high 154 yards and four touchdowns on just 11 carries, leading Bastrop to a decisive 62-6 win over Elgin Oct. 24.

Bastrop (8-0, 5-0 in district) showcased defensive talent, limiting Elgin (1-7, 1-4 in district) to just 81 total offensive yards and seven first downs. The Wildcats were held scoreless until sophomore running back Dae’Ron Traylor punched in a three-yard touchdown with 29 seconds left.

Bastrop junior quarterback Weston Nielsen had a big night as well, completing 18 of 33 passes for 248 yards and three touchdowns, while adding another score on the ground. Diego Rangel led the Bears’ receivers with 115 yards and a touchdown, and Brent Carter added five catches for 82 yards and two scores.

After punting on its opening drive, Bastrop scored on its next five possessions to build a commanding lead at halftime. Elgin fought for 17 yards behind the ball and managed one first down in the same stretch.

Nielsen opened the scoring with a 46-yard touchdown pass to Rangel at the 6:55 mark of the first quarter. Following a Wildcats fumble, he tallied another on a 13-yard run to make it 14-0 less than a minute later.

Jefferson added a oneyard touchdown run, Nielsen connected with Carter for a 19-yard score, and Jefferson’s 12-yard run pushed the lead to 34-0 with 4:39 left in the second quarter.

Elgin’s lone first down of the half came on an eight-yard pass from Trey Flores to Michael Mejias with three minutes to go before the break.

In the third, Nielsen hit Carter for another oneyard score and Jefferson took in a 65-yard run for a 48-0 lead heading into the final frame. Jefferson capped his night with a four-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter.

Elgin got on the scoreboard with a final try from Traylor, who led the Wildcats in rushing with 15 yards on 15 carries. On the drive, Flores connected with Noah Vizcarra for 27 yards and Andre Simmons for 16 yards.

Simmons had two catches for 22 yards, while Vizcarra and Mejias each pulled in three for 21 and 19 yards, respectively.

Flores completed 12 of 18 passes for 72 yards for Elgin.

Following Traylor’s touchdown run, Izaiah Regalado returned the ensuing kickoff 85 yards for one last touchdown to cap Bastrop’s high-scoring performance.

Bastrop’s last touchdown extended the Bears’ streak of scoring 60 or more points to six games.

Bastrop and Elgin both return to action with 7:30 p.m. kickoffs Halloween night. The Bears host Pflugerville at Memorial Stadium in Bastrop, while the Wildcats visit Pflugerville Connally at The Pfield in Pflugerville Friday, Oct. 31.
