The Lady Wildcats varsity volleyball team fell to the Akins Eagles in straight sets Friday, Sept. 12.
Elgin dropped the opening set 25-19 before pushing the Eagles to the limit in the second, ultimately falling 30-28. The Lady Cats kept it close again in the third set but came up short, 25-23.
Senior outside hitter Bella Navejas paced the offense with nine kills in the 3-0 loss. Senior middle blocker Emma Lugala contributed six kills along with a team-high 14 digs, while junior outside hitter Miranda Herring added five kills of her own.
Junior setter Kaitlyn Rodriguez kept pressure on Akins from the service line, recording six aces.
Elgin entered the match riding momentum from a sweep of Thorndale Aug. 29. Through the early stretch of the season, Navejas and junior outside hitter Meta Elliot have provided a spark at the net, according to coaching staff.
The pair leads Elgin in kills, while Elliot has anchored the defense as the team leader in digs. The girls roster stands at 5-17 on the season.
The Lady Cats returned to action after press time Tuesday against Hendrickson in its district opener. Elgin will continue district play Friday, Sept. 12, on the road against Weiss at Weiss High School.
