The first official shovels turned over on a new transportation center earlier this month, designed to support Elgin Independent School District’s growing bus fleet and future expansion needs.
District leaders and city officials joined project managers for a groundbreaking ceremony Aug. 21 on a 17-acre site along FM 1100, west of Neidig Elementary School. The center’s first phase will include secure parking for 36 buses, 25 district vehicles, a band 18-wheeler and 70 staff and visitor spaces, according to officials.
“We are so grateful for the role our transportation department plays in reaching our compelling purpose that every student deserves engaging, innovative educational experiences so that they are provided choice and opportunity for their future,” Superintendent Jana Rueter said in a prepared statement.
A new building on the site will also house office staff and provide facilities for bus drivers, officials added. The district designed the center to be built in phases, with Phase 2 scheduled as part of the 2024 bond package.
Future expansion plans call for mechanic bays, training rooms and additional parking. Construction is underway and expected to be completed by summer 2026.
Funding for Phase 1 of the project was approved in the district’s 2021 bond referendum.
