Miller returns for state Main Street forum

Central Texas municipality leaders merge in downtown Elgin
Miller returns for state Main Street forum

The people responsible for keeping foot traffic moving on Main streets across Central Texas gathered in Elgin last week for a daylong discussion on economic growth.

The Texas Downtown Regional Roundtable Aug. 22 offered resources and examples for communities working to attract businesses, strengthen partnerships and expand downtown activity, according to organizers. City leaders also welcomed back former Community Services Director Amy Miller for a special presentation on how Elgin’s overlay reduced vacancies.

“It really is an honor for us to host this event,” Main Street Manager Kristina Alvarez said. “We will have the opportunity to show off Elgin to our partners in the surrounding cities and introduce them to the wonderful things our community offers for downtown visitors.”

Miller resigned in February after nearly three decades of service for a position with Main Street America — from which she helped secure Elgin’s standing as one of just 41 official Texas Main Street Cities. Alvarez said Miller was instrumental in shaping downtown Elgin’s current success.

Mayor Theresa McShan and Interim Economic Development Corporation Director Kaley Frye delivered opening remarks, followed by a panel discussion on community engagement and downtown partnerships. The agenda also included a walking tour of Elgin’s Main Street district and a lunch session on the Texas PACE Program, which promotes innovative, sustainable approaches to economic development.

The day concluded with a networking event at Millie’s on Main — a recent, popular addition to the street, and a reflection of what was discussed at the roundtable.
