CASA seeks volunteers for foster students

CASA seeks volunteers for foster students

CASA of Bastrop, Fayette & Lee Counties is calling for more volunteers to help students in foster care succeed in school as the new academic year begins.

The organization says foster youth often struggle with education because of instability, including frequent school changes, disrupted learning and the effects of trauma. Court appointed special advocates step in to fight for support in the classroom.

“Students in foster care face unique challenges, but they deserve every opportunity to thrive just like their classmates,” said Kristi Bauer, CASA Bastrop executive director. “Our volunteers can help by providing a consistent presence, communicating with their teachers about their situation, advocating for needed services and making sure the children they serve are set up to succeed.”

Children in foster care may be forced to switch schools when their placements change, Bauer said, losing not only academic progress but also connections with friends and mentors. CASA volunteers work with teachers, coaches and administrators to ensure smooth transitions or help children remain in their original schools whenever possible.

Bauer said CASA urgently needs more volunteers as the school year begins.

“Every child in foster care should have an advocate who is committed to helping them be successful,” she said.

The next volunteer training session will be held in January 2026. For more information, visit casabfl.org.
