Strong start for Smithville XC

SMITHVILLE — The Smithville High School cross country program opened its 2025 season with promising results, as both the boys and girls teams turned in strong performances in their first meet of the year at the Temple Invitational Friday, Aug. 15. 

The boys varsity squad was led by senior Will Metcalf, who posted a time of 18 minutes, 30 seconds to pace the Tigers. Maddox Rivera followed close behind at 19:00, with Aidan Cox and Justice Pritchard rounding out Smithville’s top four finishers.

On the girls side, the Lady Tigers were led by Melany Villalobos, who clocked a 15:13 to set the tone for the team. Cassandra Velazquez was the next to finish with a time of 15:47, followed by Cassie Barina and Elaynah Romero, who completed Smithville’s top four.

The junior varsity girls team also had some standouts, bringing home hardware with several top-20 finishes. Zacaria Hibbens led the way with a 17:02, while Ava Bryant (17:26), Cali Geltmeier (17:45) and Kimberly Ibarra (18:20) all earned spots among the top finishers.
