BASTROP — The Bastrop Lady Bears varsity volleyball team opened the regular season with a 2-2 record after a strong first week of competition.
Bastrop began the season on a high note with a 3-0 sweep of the Elgin Lady Wildcats before splitting four matchups in the Austin ISD Jason Landers Classic.
Against Elgin, the Lady Bears set the tone early with a 25-16 victory in the opening set. They battled through a tight second set to win 25-21, then closed out the match in dominant fashion with a 25-9 third set.
The Lady Bears carried that momentum into tournament play, defeating Austin Eastside Early College in straight sets. Bastrop cruised to a 25-7 win in the first set before closing the match with a 25-15 victory in the second.
However, Bastrop ran into tougher competition in its final two matchups of the tournament. The Lady Bears fell to Austin Bowie in straight sets, 25-20 and 25-19, before closing the event with a hard-fought three-set battle against the Texas School for the Deaf.
Bastrop dropped the first set 25-22, responded with a 25-17 win in the second, but came up short in the decisive third set, 25-22.
Senior setter Lanie Coy, senior middle hitter Keyaira Limuel Washington and junior outside hitter Olive Eberly led the Lady Bears throughout the stretch, providing consistency on both sides of the net.
Bastrop returned to action Aug. 19 against Pflugerville Connally and will host its annual home tournament.
