BASTROP — Bastrop’s summer of sports glory reached the City Council dais Aug. 12, as Mayor Ishmael Harris honored some of the city’s star athletes with a special proclamation.
Harris, who said he has coached youth sports for nearly 30 years, praised the Bastrop Knights Little League team for advancing to the PONY World Series in Youngsville, Louisiana. The 14U team represented South Region Austin, marking the first time in recent history that a Bastrop squad reached that level of competition.
“Y’all came together as a team and you accomplished something that many could only dream of,” Harris said.
Most of the players will begin high school this year as freshmen.
Harris also recognized Bastrop native Olivia Donner, who plays softball with Texas Blaze Fastpitch out of Round Rock.
Donner was named Most Valuable Player after helping her team win a national tournament in California. She batted .381 in the tournament, pitched 11 strikeouts and has been nominated for national player of the year. “[Youth sports] does a lot for development of friendship, discipline, commitment, falling in line under leadership — and it’s a way to have fun,” Harris said. “It’s an outlet for kids.”
Council proclaimed Aug. 12 as Bastrop Knights Day and Olivia Donner Day.
