ELGIN ON THE GRIDIRON
The Wildcats began preseason football practice Monday with a new head coach, a roster full of fresh faces and a competitive edge driven by open starting spots.
Elgin’s varsity athletes opened their 2025 campaign Aug. 4 in helmets, shirts and shorts, following the four-day acclimation period required by the University Interscholastic League. First-year Head Coach Rich Lucero said he was encouraged by the team’s energy and turnout during the opening session.
“Considering we kind of had a late start in the offseason, I thought the numbers were a positive thing,” Lucero said. “The energy was really good, and you can tell there’s a brotherhood growing in our team. That’s the most exciting thing.”
Elgin hits the turf looking to fill gaps and replace several vital players from last year’s squad — which clinched the Wildcats’ first playoff win in 10 years. Lucero said the team’s approach is built on urgency and opportunity as players compete for open roles.
“The way we’re spinning it is that there are a lot of opportunities,” he said. “Granted, we lost some really good football players in the offseason, but there are chances for others to step up — and the kids see that, and the coaches certainly see that.”
Elgin’s quarterback slot remains the lineup’s biggest question mark. Former starter Dylan Owens left the key position vacant after departing for Hutto over the summer.
“Everyone in America knows that if you don’t have a quarterback, you’re going to struggle,” Lucero said. “We’re looking at several candidates right now. It might be a situation like last year, where we play two, but we’re not married to anything. We’re going to do what it takes to win.”
Lucero replaces Heath Clawson at the helm this year, promoted from within after a successful career as offensive coordinator since 2021. Clawson left in May to become the head coach at Class 3A Woodville.
About 120 players reported for the first day of practice, with more expected in the coming days, according to coaching staff. The Wildcats open the season Thursday, Aug. 28, on the road against Buda Hays.
Friday night lights return to Elgin Sept. 12 for the Wildcats’ first home game against Montgomery.
