BASTROP — Bastrop Independent School District has named Deputy Superintendent Dr. Kristi Lee as interim superintendent, following the retirement of longtime leader Barry Edwards last month.
The Bastrop ISD Board of Trustees approved Lee’s appointment during its July 15 meeting. She will take over the role effective Aug. 1.
“We’re fortunate to have someone with Dr. Lee’s experience to lead the district during this time,” Board President Ashley Mutschink said. “As we begin a new school year, the board has deep confidence in Dr. Lee’s leadership and dedication to our schools and community, and know the district is in excellent hands.”
Lee has served as the district’s deputy superintendent since 2022 and brings more than two decades of public education experience, including roles as a teacher, principal and communications director.
“It is a privilege to serve as interim superintendent, and I appreciate the board’s trust and support,” Lee said. “This is a pivotal moment for Bastrop ISD, a time full of promise and opportunity. Together, we will confidently move Bastrop ISD forward, with students at the center of every decision.”
Lee holds a bachelor's degree from Stephen F. Austin State University and master's and doctorate degrees in educational leadership and policy from Sam Houston State University. A Bastrop resident since 2016, she is active in the community through her work with the Bastrop Education Foundation, YMCA Board of Managers, Visit Bastrop Board of Directors and the Bastrop Chamber of Commerce.
Her appointment follows the retirement of Edwards, who concluded a 37-year career in public education, including 17 years with Bastrop ISD and the last seven as superintendent. Under his leadership, the district saw a 19% increase in enrollment and passed two bond elections funding multiple new schools and districtwide upgrades.
“It has truly been the honor of a lifetime,” Edwards said at the time of his retirement announcement. “From my first classroom in El Paso to my years in Bastrop ISD, I’ve had the privilege of working alongside passionate educators, dedicated families and inspiring students.”
The district will share updates on its search for a permanent superintendent and offer opportunities for community input as the process moves forward, officials said.
