COLLEGE STATION — The Bastrop Bears varsity football 7-on-7 team competed in the Division I state championships this past weekend in College Station, falling, 2721, to Harker Heights in the first round of bracket play.

Bastrop was placed in Pool 13 alongside Alief Taylor, San Antonio East Central and Richardson Lake Highlands. The Bears finished 2-1 in pool play, opening the tournament with a 27-19 win over Alief Taylor.

They then dropped a close matchup to Lake Highlands, 21-14, before closing out pool play with a thrilling 34-33 victory over East Central. Bastrop finished second in the group behind Lake Highlands.

The Bears battled hard against Harker Heights in the opening round but came up just short. Junior quarterback Weston Neilsen led the way and continues to solidify his reputation as one of the top-rated quarterbacks in Texas heading into the 2025 season.

Bastrop is coming off a district title and a postseason win in 2024 and hopes to build on that momentum throughout the offseason.
