BASTROP — Bastrop Independent School District Superintendent Barry Edwards has announced his retirement, concluding a 37-year career in public education, including 17 years with the district and the last seven as its top leader.
The Bastrop ISD Board of Trustees formally accepted Edwards’ retirement during its meeting June 17. The board will begin the search for his replacement in the coming months, according to district officials.
“It has truly been the honor of a lifetime,” Edwards said. “From my first classroom in El Paso to my years in Bastrop ISD, I’ve had the privilege of working alongside passionate educators, dedicated families and inspiring students.”
Under Edwards’ leadership, the district saw a 19% increase in student enrollment and passed two bond elections in 2021 and 2023. The measures brought facility improvements and funding for four new elementary schools and two new middle schools, as well as classroom and technology upgrades across the district. Other milestones during his tenure include the expansion of full-day pre-kindergarten, the opening of the BISD Family Resource Center and Health Clinic and increased access to student technology and internet services.
“Mr. Edwards has led Bastrop ISD with integrity, heart and a deep commitment to our students and staff,” said Board President Ashley Mutschink. “On behalf of the board, I want to thank him for his service and wish him and his family the very best in this next chapter.” Edwards began his career as a teacher in El Paso and later worked as a principal in Socorro and Ysleta independent school districts. Known for his bilingual fluency and student advocacy, he built a reputation for connecting with the diverse communities he served, district representatives said.
“Bastrop ISD will always hold a special place in my heart,” Edwards said. “I leave this role confident in the strength of this district and in its current leadership, and filled with hope for a bright future ahead.”
The school board plans to name an interim superintendent and launch a community-involved search process to select the district’s next leader. Bastrop ISD will share updates and engagement opportunities as the process moves forward, according to officials.
Edwards said he looks forward to spending more time with his wife, Merridith, their children and their growing family, which is expecting two new grandchildren in December.
“I will always be grateful for the trust and support this community has shown me,” he added.
