Armed garage standoff ends in surrender, arrest

BASTROP — A Bastrop man was taken into custody early June 11 after a four-hour standoff with local law enforcement, officials said.

Andrew James Contreras, 41, was arrested by Bastrop Police Department officers and Bastrop County Sheriff’s Office deputies after reportedly barricading himself inside a garage with a firearm at the 200 block of North Hunting Lodge Lane.

Officers were initially dispatched about 7 a.m. in response to a “nature unknown” call, according to an official release from the department. Police said Contreras and an adult woman had been involved in a domestic dispute.

Upon investigation, several children were found inside the home, along with an unknown number of firearms, police said. Deputies were on the scene as officers worked to safely remove the children and others from the residence, according to the department.

Contreras then reportedly barricaded himself inside the garage of the home with a firearm, prompting a standoff that lasted about four hours.

After the long negotiation process, police said he surrendered and was taken into custody without incident. No injuries were reported.

Contreras was booked into the Bastrop County Jail on one count of interfering with an emergency call, one count of assault causing bodily injury and four counts of unlawful restraint. Each unlawful restraint charge carried a $25,000 bond, while the other two charges were $10,000 each, according to jail records.

He was released Saturday on a $120,000 bond.

Police said no further details will be released at this time.
