BASTROP — Voters will return to the polls June 7 to decide the runoff election for Bastrop mayor, following a May 3 vote that failed to produce a majority winner.
Willie De La Rosa and Ishmael Harris are vying for the one-year term left unfilled by the January resignation of former Mayor Lyle Nelson. Early voting runs May 27 through June 3.
Harris led the general election with approximately 48% of the vote, defeating De La Rosa and Ward Northcutt, but did not secure the required 50%-plus-one margin to win outright, according to county records.
John Kirkland was unanimously chosen by City Council to continue serving as mayor pro tem until a new mayor is elected. Kirkland was reelected to his Place 5 council seat with 56% of the vote.
Voter turnout for the May election was just over 7%, with only 4,080 ballots cast from Bastrop County’s 53,036 registered voters.
Other election results from earlier this month include Perry Lowe winning the Place 1 council seat with 70% of the vote over Cecilia Serna, and Chris Dillon narrowly defeating John Eason in the only contested Bastrop Independent School District trustee race. Both were sworn in earlier this month.
