A planned multifamily housing development could impact a slice of wetland near Elgin, prompting a federal review and call for public input.
The 11-acre property off Roy Rivers Road, just south of U.S. 290 near Walmart, is the proposed site for a residential complex expected to be completed in 2026. According to an environmental assessment conducted by Stelly Environmental, about 480 square feet of wetland — less than one acre — would be filled to accommodate construction.
Although no floodplain will be disturbed, according to the report, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development must assess the undeveloped project under federal rules governing wetlands and floodplains.
HUD said the project’s public notice serves three purposes: to inform and involve affected communities, to educate the public about wetland and floodplain issues and to ensure transparency when federal actions may increase risk to people or the environment.
The project is being reviewed under the National Housing Act, which provides federal support for certain types of housing construction.
