Bastrop and Cedar Creek will each host spring football games Friday, May 16, as both programs look to lay the groundwork for the 2025 season.
Bastrop’s game will be held at Erhard Field, starting with the subvarsity match at 5:30 p.m. and the varsity to follow. Cedar Creek will host its spring showcase, beginning with subvarsity at 5:30 p.m., followed by the varsity game at Cedar Creek High School.
Bastrop looks to reload
The Bears enter their spring game riding the momentum of a historic 2024 campaign, finishing the regular season a perfect 7-0 and clinching the district championship with a 38-35 win over Liberty Hill. As the Bears prepare for the 2025 season, their biggest questions lie in the passing game. Bastrop will need to replace its top three receivers—Ramonz Adams, Kayshone Moore and Jaylen Gratten—who were key pieces of last year’s offense.
Fortunately for the Bears, junior quarterback Weston Neilsen returns under center. The highly regarded prospect threw for 37 touchdowns last season and will once again lead the offense. Friday’s spring game could offer early insight into who will emerge as Neilsen’s go-to targets in the fall.
New energy under Shaw
The Cedar Creek Eagles haven’t won a game in three seasons, but there is renewed optimism surrounding the program under new head coach Jared Shaw.
Shaw brings not only a new offensive scheme but also a fresh approach aimed at changing the team’s culture and mindset. The Eagles’ spring game will serve as an early test of that progress as players adapt to new systems on both sides of the ball.
With Shaw at the helm, Cedar Creek is hopeful this new era will spark the turnaround the program has been seeking, coaching staff said.
