BASTROP — Look left, look right, look twice—a valuable message shared by volunteers last weekend as part of a statewide motorcycle safety campaign.

Participants gathered May 11 at Buc-ee’s in Bastrop to remind drivers to stay alert for two-wheeled motorists during the Share the Road: Look Twice for Motorcycles initiative, led by the Texas Department of Transportation.

“Motorcycle deaths are preventable,” volunteer Gabriel Gonzaga-Valenzuela said. “We’re spreading awareness for those who might be starting a journey on the road to be on the lookout for motorcycles.”

The program aims to reduce the staggering number of motorcycle-related fatalities across Texas, representatives said. According to TxDOT, 2,751 motorcyclists have died in crashes statewide over the past five years.

Volunteers gave attendees a firsthand look at the dangers riders face through a virtual reality setup. The mobile exhibit included a giant inflatable motorcycle and a 360-degree immersive simulation that showed how difficult it can be to see motorcyclists in traffic.

The experience let participants view traffic scenarios from both a driver’s and a motorcyclist’s perspective, urging drivers to slow down, give riders extra space and always look twice—especially at intersections.

“We’re going across the whole state to spread awareness and save lives,” Gonzaga-Valenzuela added. “If you see these vehicles and yellow tents, stop by.”

The event also featured giveaways and educational materials as part of National Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month throughout May.
