Chamber member Kara Gooch has released a new eBook, “START to Lead: An eBook Guide for Emerging Leaders,” aimed at helping professionals navigate and lead in Elgin’s rapidly growing economy.
With more than 15,000 new homes under construction and the city’s proximity to major employers, Gooch—a former national corporate leader and now a workforce coach—draws from her experience to offer practical strategies tailored to the local business landscape.
The book introduces the “START” leadership framework, which emphasizes:

Chamber celebrates 91 years
The Elgin Chamber of Commerce marks its 91st anniversary this month.
Community members are invited to stop by for a slice of birthday cake Wednesday, May 14, at the new downtown location and visitor center, 30 N. Main St.
Western Days approaching
Planning is underway for the 56th annual Western Days Festival, and local businesses are encouraged to get involved.
Sponsorship opportunities are still available, and participation in the festival parade is free.

Museum displays Gates exhibit
The Elgin Depot Museum will host an exhibit featuring the artwork of Lillian Reyes Gates through the end of May.
The local artist, a retired dietitian and nutritionist, is also a gardener, martial arts practitioner and dancer. Her art spans oil, watercolor, acrylic and photography. The current exhibit centers on themes of the environment, edibles and animals.
Gates began her creative work in fashion design as an undergraduate at the University of Texas at Austin and later studied watercolor painting with the late Elizabeth Christine Sullivan. She currently studies acrylic painting with Ashley Maria Smith, an art instructor with Elgin Independent School District and Clever Tiger Art Gallery.
