The Elgin Garden Club is back with its selection for April’s Yard of the Month, choosing Mat and Joann Southard of 1007 Main St. The couple, both avid gardeners, have created an inviting display with two Empress China berry trees, new rose bushes along the driveway and an assortment of dianthus, salvia, pansies, daylilies and lantana. Staying on top of their plantings in retirement, they also maintain raised beds in the backyard for a variety of veggies and berries. The local gardening group meets on the first Tuesday of every month at Grace Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall, 801 W. 11th St., starting at 9:30 a.m. with a plant exchange.
