Elgin’s powerlifting teams showcased their strength during regional meets last week, with the boys placing sixth Saturday, March 8, and the Lady Wildcats finishing third March 1.
Between both squads, four athletes qualified for state competition.
Senior Miguel Nunez took first place in the 181-pound weight class for the Wildcats, posting a total 1,745 pounds lifted, with a 675-pound squat, 425pound bench press and 645-pound deadlift.
Senior Joseph Stiggers also secured a state berth, finishing third in the 308-pound class with a combined 1,680 pounds, including a 625-pound squat, a 385-pound bench press and a 670-pound deadlift.
On the girls’ side, sophomore Yasmin Hernandez led the way by winning the 97-pound division with a 525 pound total, courtesy of a 185-pound squat, a 110-pound bench press and a 230-pound deadlift.
Teammate Yailen Huitron took second in the 105-pound class, lifting 390 total pounds across a 140-pound squat, an 80-pound bench press and a 170-pound deadlift.
The Lady Wildcats will compete at the state meet in Edinburg March 13–15, while the boys will travel to Abilene March 21–22.
