Community members gathered outside the Elgin Public Library last week to dedicate a bench along Main Street in honor of former city employee John Morrow, who died July 15.
The green-tinted bench was unveiled Sept. 10 during a ceremony featuring remarks from Mayor Theresa McShan, Public Works Director Michael Gonzales and retired pastor Sheldon Johnson. Morrow was an Elgin native born in 1964 and joined the city in 2019 following a career at the Texas State Capitol.
“I remember in his interview so long ago, John mentioned that he wasn’t ready to retire,” Gonzales said. “At his time with the city, John helped with just about anything and was happy to jump in.”
Morrow started in the parks division before switching to streets in 2023, while also assisting with special events and other city operations.
Those who knew him said they remember Morrow for his friendly personality and willingness to strike up a conversation.
The bench’s inscription reads: “A cherished friend to all, whose kindness and warmth will never be forgotten.”
