Victim, person of interest named in Elgin death

Elgin police are investigating the death of a local woman after officers found her body during a welfare check last month.

Officers discovered the body of Sonya Martinez Guerra, 55, at 108-A Anderson Drive on the afternoon of June 30. An investigation revealed she had sustained trauma to her body.

Police have identified Christopher Vargas, 33, as a person of interest in connection with the death.

As of July 6, Vargas was being held in the Hays County Jail in San Marcos on unrelated charges and awaits transfer to the Bastrop County Jail, where he will be held on a $1 million bond for burglary of a habitation with intent to commit another crime.

Additional charges and a higher bond amount are possible as the investigation continues, police said.
