18-year-old dies from gunshot wound, 17-year-old charged

An 18-year-old Elgin man is dead after he was shot to death Tuesday morning.

Jowell Wallace, 18, was found shot to death at a residence on the 100 block of Jefferson Cove. Jayden Sherrod, 17, was arrested and taken to the Bastrop County Jail on a first-degree murder charge.

At 3:30 a.m., the Elgin Police Department responded to the residence on the 100 block of 100 block of Jefferson Cove in reference to a subject who was shot. According to Elgin police, Wallace was found dead inside the residence.

Sherrod and Wallace were reportedly acquaintances. Elgin police said the incident is considered "isolated."

This is the second homicide incident in Elgin in 2025. Charles and Sirley Cunningham were both killed in a murder-suicide on Feb. 11.
