BASTROP — The Bastrop Bears opened their football season with a dominant 55-14 win over Alvin Friday, Aug. 29, at Bastrop High School.

Junior quarterback Weston Nielsen threw for more than 300 yards and secured several touchdowns to lead the Bears’ offense.

Nielsen struck first with a 57-yard touchdown pass to Dallas Crencenzo, who finished just shy of 100 receiving yards with two scores. Crencenzo added a 25-yard touchdown catch in the second quarter to put Bastrop ahead 14-0.

Utility player Gary Jefferson, a transfer from Elgin High School, made an immediate impact with a 33-yard screen pass to set up Bastrop deep in Alvin territory. He later caught a 35-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter and added an 18--yard rushing score. Jefferson finished with more than 100 receiving yards and one touchdown.

The Bears led 21-7 at halftime before breaking the game open with four touchdowns in the third quarter, building a 49-7 advantage. They capped the win with another score in the fourth to seal the season-opening rout.

Bastrop (1-0) will travel Friday, Sept. 5, to face China Spring at 7 p.m., looking to avenge last year’s loss to the Cougars.
