One of Elgin’s finalists in its search for a new city manager was terminated from her current post in Virginia last week, but city officials are not saying how it might affect the hiring process.
The Martinsville City Council voted 4-1 Aug. 7 to fire City Manager Aretha Ferrell-Benavides for cause following more than two hours in closed session, according to Virginia news outlet Cardinal News. The council reportedly cited “malfeasance and dishonesty,” violations of the city charter, unsatisfactory performance and conduct that undermined public trust, but did not provide details.
Elgin officials said Monday they had no comment on the city manager search when asked whether they were aware of the termination and if it would affect finalist evaluations.
The council is scheduled to meet in a called work session after press time Tuesday, Aug. 12. The closed-door agenda includes items on city manager recruitment and contract negotiations, according to city documents.
Some residents have voiced concerns about public trust and the importance of securing the best candidate for Elgin — a city still recovering from years of financial mismanagement and turnover in key positions.
Ferrell-Benavides is one of four finalists named last month in Elgin’s nationwide search to replace Interim City Manager Isaac Turner, appointed in January after the removal of former City Manager Tom Mattis. The other finalists are former Dickinson City Manager Theo Melancon, Texas Division of Emergency Management Chief Operating Officer Jared Miller and Cibolo City Manager Wayne Reed.
Acting Community Services Director Stacey Osbourne said the city would keep the Courier informed on council decisions.
