CEDAR CREEK — Major improvements to a stretch of Texas 71 west of Bastrop are slated to break ground later this year, using part of a $183 million state package aimed at improving daily travel, safety and airport access.

Funding for the highway intersection at Tucker Hill Lane comes through a Texas Department of Transportation contract awarded to Jordan Foster Construction. The Bastrop County project will replace traffic lights at the crossway with a grade-separated overpass and add new one-way frontage roads — aiming for reliability and an unobtrusive build.

“Many of our employees live in these neighborhoods or commute on these roads,” said John Goodrich, company president. “We prioritize being a good neighbor throughout construction by minimizing disruptions.”

The plan also calls for expanded bicycle and pedestrian accommodations. Work is scheduled to begin later this year, with phased construction continuing through fall 2029, according to TxDOT.

Officials said the location is a critical connection point in one of Central Texas’ fastest- growing corridors, where development has fueled heavier traffic in recent years. The upgrades are expected to reshape travel patterns for Bastrop-to-Austin drivers while addressing the county’s long-term mobility needs.

Jordan Foster Construction has worked extensively with TxDOT on large-scale road projects statewide, officials said. In addition to the local improvements, part of the recent funding will go toward expanding a section of U.S. 90 in San Antonio.
