BASTROP — More than 1,600 Bastrop Independent School District middle school students are starting off the academic year with new internet-connected devices.
The district celebrated its entry into the Verizon Innovative Learning Schools program with a rollout event at Bastrop Middle School Aug. 8. Students from Bastrop Middle and Cedar Creek Middle School received a total of 1,682 devices with data plans.
“This opportunity … is invaluable,” said Chris Lairscey, BISD’s director of digital learning and library services. “Our students, teachers, staff and district at large will benefit greatly from the access, systems, professional learning and leadership coaching this will bring.”
Officials said the program is part of Verizon’s decade-long initiative to expand digital inclusion and close the digital divide. It equips participating schools with devices for every student and teacher, a dedicated technology coach and professional development for educators to integrate technology into lessons.
The two Bastrop schools are among 34 joining the program for the 202526 school year, bringing the career total to 660 schools nationwide — nearly 9 million students — according to officials. Verizon estimates the market value of its investment at more than $2.3 million per school and $1 billion since 2012.
“Verizon Innovative Learning ignites innovation and curiosity within the classroom,” said Ryan Beck, Verizon’s director of state and local government affairs. “We are excited about the lasting impact it will have on students and their communities.”
Officials said the program helps students stay connected for learning in and out of the classroom, while giving teachers tools to personalize instruction and boost engagement.
