In 2006, a fire at a neighboring ranch spurred thoughts of emergency preparedness and the dangers of wildfires. Members of Down Home Ranch were the first responders and could have put it out had they arrived there a couple of minutes earlier. Luckily, firefighters showed up to put it out, including a contingent from the Texas Forest Service.
That was the beginning of a great relationship with state and local responders, kickstarting a journey to becoming a Firewise Community, one of only 101 in Texas, and the main reason behind the coveted Texas Chainsaw Manicure volunteer event, year after year.
