The Elgin football program at the middle school level has an extraordinary number of young boys wanting to play football. This has allowed middle school boys sports coordinator Aaron Griffin and his staff to be able to field an “A” team and a “B” team for both the 7th grade and the 8th grade. Last Tuesday, the 8th grade played at the Wildcat stadium, hosting Georgetown Tippit Middle School. Coach Griffin started the tradition last year of having the middle-schoolers play one game at the high school stadium to give the players and their fans a treat. The B team got the night started on the right note, totally dominating the contest, 37-0. The offense was led by quarterback Alex Gamez and running back Tristan Navarette. On defense, nosetackle Michael Pruett led the charge with several tackle and helping the “D” blank the Tippit offense.
Not to be outshined, the A team took the field and showed they too can completely shut down a foe, winning handily over the Titans from Tippit 33-0. Leading the charge were Jose Alvarez and Alexander Gutierrez. On the other side of the ball, Raul Flores and Dennis Lavigne with two interceptions and two fumble recoveries respectively.
The B team improved to 2-0 for the season and the A team is now 1-1. Next up, the 'Cats travel to Liberty Hill on September 24th for a 5 p.m. kickoff.
The 7th grade team played at Tippit on the same night. The B team came away with an easy victory 32-0. The A team fell just short in the nightcap, losing 20-14. Because of a rain-out the previous week, this was the first game for both teams. The A team is now 0-1 for the season while the B team is 1-0. Their next game is at home at the middle school stadium against Liberty Hill, starting at 5 p.m. on September 24th.
