In the Parable of the Unforgiving Servant, Matthew 18:21-35, Jesus says that the King completely forgives his servant’s debt of an unimaginable amount of money, completely by grace, with no expectation of repayment. On the cross, our debt to God has been paid. “Tetelestai,” Jesus cried out, John 19:30. “It is finished.” What all humans owed to God has been paid in full by Jesus, so our debt is canceled. “The Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for the masses,” Matthew 20:28.
