The Boys & Girls Club at Elgin High School, which is an extension of the Boys and Girls Club of Austin, is an after-school program focused on inspiring students to realize their full potential to become responsible members of society who care about the world around them.
Deyanira “Deya” Burns, a 17-year-old EHS senior, is a club kid who has always dreamed of attending Texas State University to become an English teacher. In November 2019, she was chosen as Elgin High School’s Youth of the Year by Sydney Mercer, director of the EHS Boys & Girls Club, to represent Elgin at the Austin-area competition in February. After a lengthy application process that included writing a speech and three essays, Deya was named Austin’s Youth of the Year and awarded a $10,000 scholarship. And just a month later, Deya’s childhood dream was realized when she received an acceptance letter from Texas State University.
Deya was scheduled to attend the 2020 Texas Summit at the AT&T Executive Education and Conference Center in Austin from March 22 to March 24, where she would have taken part in panel discussions and meetings before she competes along with 12 other students from around the state for the title of Texas Youth of the Year and a scholarship of $20,000. According to Mitzi Stoute Faniola, executive director of the Texas Alliance of Boys & Girls Clubs, all 2020 Texas Summit activities have been canceled except for the Youth of the Year competition, which will be conducted via virtual conference.
