BASTROP — Elon Musk’s SpaceX, headquartered in Bastrop, is targeting Tuesday, May 27, for the ninth test flight of its Starship rocket, according to a company release.
Starship will launch from SpaceX’s Starbase facility in Cameron County and is designed to carry humans and cargo to the moon, Mars and beyond. The upcoming mission will test the rocket’s ability to launch, separate from its booster and re-enter Earth’s atmosphere, officials said.
Although the launch will take place on the Gulf Coast, much of the program’s development is tied to the company’s local operations, where engineers and technicians work on systems used in both Starship and Starlink.
Viewing will be available from public locations on South Padre Island, including the Cameron County Amphitheater at Isla Blanca Park, as well as in Port Isabel and nearby areas. The company will also livestream the event.
According to SpaceX, environmental protections will be enforced in coordination with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
Additional details about flight restrictions and safety zones are expected in the coming days, the company said.
