The students learned many of these careers involve other expertise, such as health sciences for the emergency medical services provided by Acadian; engineering and science with Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative; construction, estimating and engineering with the City of Elgin and their heavy equipment; fire rescue with the Elgin Fire Department; and law enforcement with the Elgin Police Department and the Bastrop County Sheriff’s Office. Many fifth-grade students are about to enter middle school and choose a program of study to help launch their career, and Careers on Wheels is a day to get students thinking about future career possibilities, according to Bruce Peckover, Elgin High School director of college, career and military readiness.
