James R. Glass, 90 of Bartlett, TX formerly of The Hornsby Bend area of Eastern Travis County, passed away peacefully on his ranch surrounded by family & friends.

James Robert was born on August 3, 1930, in the bend of the Colorado River known as Hunters Bend to Ella Voncile Dailey & James T. Glass. He grew up in the middle of cotton, corn, and spinach fields with three sisters Ella, Fannie, Mary, and one brother Ralph Glass. James went to Hornsby Dunlap school Primmer through eighth and graduated Austin high school twice. Once in 1949 and again in 1951, to please his father with the right plan to go to college. After graduating with plans of going to college, the US Army drafted him. His time was spent at Camp Gifu, Japan where he oversaw all Petroleum products. Once he returned, he was set up on a date with Retha by Bobby Jean Dailey & Elroy Brown to go to Church & then to the Bastrop Homecoming Rodeo Aug 1953. Oct 28, 1954, James & Retha Lane were married.

James farmed & ranched alongside of his father. James loved family but most of all loved to calf rope and ride. He could pop a bull whip & trick rope like nobody’s business and had the only lit arena in the fifty’s, & sixty’s practice was three nights a week, one nickel per calf.

James made his living by Ranching & Farming and continue to do so right up to the end. He loved checking his cows and loved to watch the head Chute being worked!! Anyone that knew James knew he had a heart of gold. He never met a stranger, welcomed everyone and would be the first to help.
