The season couldn’t start soon enough for Elgin’s Volleyball coaches and players, so the excitement was reverberating all through the gym on Tuesday night, September 22nd. COVID has had a huge impact on the team’s ability to practice and even to play a game, so while this was Elgin’s first game, it was the fourth game for their opponent, Copperas Cove.
After having my temperature taken and filling out COVID related paperwork, I was allowed in the gym, where attendance numbers were carefully controlled to still meet all UIL requirements.
Elgin will struggle all year with their lack of height in their front court, but will not take a back seat to hustle and grit. Copperas Cove’s ladies were bigger and stronger up front, but the Lady Cats came out lean and mean, and took the first set 25-17.
But the Lady Bulldawgs settled down and took advantage of their strength, with Edwards and Davis leading their team in kills. The next three sets went their way, 25-11, 25-7 and closed out the match in set four 25-12.
Because all their matches before District were cancelled except for this match, Coach Covault felt it was a good thing to have her team play a well oiled machine like Copperas Cove. She felt the pressure and the different attacks the Lady Bulldawgs used will help the Lady Cats get ready for district play. She is looking forward to seeing the ladies grow throughout the season.
The Lady Cats were led by good play from Cinthia Navarro, Emma Neidig, Morgan Heine and Hailey Girod. Their next game will start District play as they travel to Cedar Creek on Tuesday, September 29th and then host Pflugerville HS on Friday, October 2nd. The Freshman and JV games start at 5:30 pm with the Varsity game following at approximately 6:30 pm.
