After the tragic loss of nine souls, including basketball superstar Kobe Bryant, in the recent helicopter crash in California, players from Elgin and Georgetown Forbes middle schools wanted to take a moment and honor the legendary Kobe’s impact on them and all players, no matter their age and skill set.
Before their game Monday night, January 27, both 7th grade B teams took the court, holding a banner thanking Kobe, whose nickname was Black Mamba. The banner was signed by all the Elgin Middle School basketball players, and some added their own personal message to the sign. There was a moment of silence observed by the players and fans, after which Coach Aaron Griffin from Elgin Middle School added a healing message for all victims in the crash.
Game results included the Elgin 7th B team winning their game 28-18. The 7th A team fell 54-37. The 8th B team totally dominated 65-16, while the 8th A team won just as easily 58-14.
