Lawrence Douglas Price

On November 29, 1928, in Montgomery, Texas, our Lord in Heaven blessed the world with the birth of Deacon L. D. Price, a longtime resident of Bastrop County and on January 23, 2022, the community began to mourn the passing of a strong and upright citizen, one that was an icon for his family, his community, his church, the city, the county, and the state of Texas. His given name was Lawrence Douglas Price.

Deacon Price was born to the late Edd Price and Willie Davis. He attended the public schools of Montgomery and graduated. Furthering his education, Deacon Price graduated from Prairie View College with a degree in Agriculture Education.

Deacon Price accepted Jesus Christ at an early age and was united with his family home church, there he remains until he went off to school.  Then he joined Mount Moriah when he came to Elgin, there he remained until his death.

Deacon Price was united in Holy Matrimony to his forever love, Goldie B. Henson, on February 28, 1951, at Christian Home Missionary Baptist Church in Houston Texas. This union was blessed with two sons: Lawrence Douglas Price, Jr., and Edwin Joseph Price. The couple enjoyed their life journey for sixty-one years at the time of her passing.

Deacon Price moved to Elgin, Texas and began working first for the Booker T. Washington school that was later absorbed as part of the entire Elgin ISD as an Agriculture and Horticulture Science teacher for 45 years until his retirement. His first assignment as a schoolteacher at the Booker T. Washington school was to build his own classroom.  While working for the district he wore many hats: bus driver, basketball score keeper, tennis coach, football & basketball referee, and sold concessions during the lunch hour at Elgin Jr. High School. He also was a founding member of the Booker T. Washington School historical committee.

Deacon Price was an avid baseball fan and enjoyed watching it along with football in his later years.  He loved hunting down and finding a good deal on groceries and could tell you at the drop of a hat who had what on sale at any given time. Spending time with family and helped organize the yearly Davis Family Reunion held at the home place in Montgomery Texas.

Deacon Price was a faithful member of Mount Moriah Baptist Church, he and his family were willing workers.  Deacon Price worked with many auxiliaries throughout his tenure including Chairman of the Deacon Board, President of Brotherhood, Sunday School teacher, and sung in the Male Choir. Deacon Price served under Reverend R. A. Westbrook, Reverend C. F. M. Jones, Reverend L. R. White and to the present pastor, Reverend Steven Ward. Deacon served the people, loving his family and his church until his death.

Deacon Price is preceded in death by his Beloved wife, Goldie. his parents Edd and Willie Price; his brother, Willie Edward Price; a niece, Erma Phillips and numerous cousins, lifelong friends, and many church family members, who were like siblings.   

Deacon Price leaves in God’s hands to share his legacy: his sons, Lawrence, Jr. and his special friend, Carol; and Edwin and his wife, Eva;  grandchildren: Dakota and her husband, Steven Burns, Douglas Price, Leslie Price and her husband, Alexandro Ascencio, and Trevor Price;  great-grandchildren: Azlan Burns, Khaliyah Price, Nyla Burns, and Jaxon Price Ascencio; a honorary daughter, Diana and her husband, Willie Jones; his oldest nephew and niece, Johnnie Price and Gloria Merritt James along with a host of other nephews, nieces, cousins, and the Mount Moriah church family, who will hold his priceless legacy close to the their hearts.
