James Matthew Foehner

James Matthew Foehner of Elgin, Texas was called Home on December 17, 2021, after a valiant battle with cancer. Matt was born in Elgin, to Larry and Carole Foehner on November 8, 1976.  He graduated from Elgin High School with the Class of ‘95 and went on to attend college at Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 2001. While at Southwest Texas State, he played the trombone for the Bobcat Marching Band and made many lifelong friends.

In December 2004, Matt met the love of his life, Kimberly on a blind date that was set up by a mutual friend. They were married on January 7, 2006.

After several years of working in the hospitality field, Matt pursued his teaching certificate and began his true calling in Education. Matt began his teaching and coaching career at Elgin High School in 2009. He is remembered as a beloved member of the EHS faculty, coaching staff, and mentor to numerous students. Matt always went out of his way to let his students know that he loved and cared about them and their future, even beyond their high school career.

Matt is preceded in death by his precious angel babies and his grandparents, Wayland and Velma Louise Foehner, and James Otis and Martha May Brown.

He is survived by his beloved and devoted wife, Kimberly Jean Foehner; his parents, Larry and Carole Foehner; his brother, Clinton Foehner and wife Tara; his mother and father-in-laws, Dennis and Brenda Spire; brother-in-law, John Mark Spire and wife Shelby; brother-in-law, Matthew Spire. “Big Uncle Matt,” as he is affectionately known, is survived by his five cherished nieces, Ellis, Lillie, Harper, Mae, and Kendall. Matt is also survived by his “German daughter,” Johanna Berresheim.

The family would like to thank the community of Elgin, Elgin Independent School District, First Baptist Church Elgin, Family Worship Center and numerous prayer warriors for their unwavering prayers, love, and support during Matt’s illness. The family would also like to specially thank Matt’s nurses, doctors, and tech teams at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center and Baylor Scott & White Hospice team. 

Family and Friends will gather for Visitation at Elgin Funeral Home, Tuesday, December 21st from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM.  A Celebration of Matthew's Life will be conducted at First Baptist Church of Elgin, Wednesday, December 22nd at 2:00 PM with the Reverend, Jason Huddleston presiding.  Interment will follow at Elgin Cemetery.
