On January 15, the first day of the filing period, Mayor Chris Cannon and wife Lauren filed his re-election paperwork as they have done many times before.

“It’s kind of a tradition we’ve developed over the years,” Chris said. “We are in it together from the very beginning.”

Cannon appointed Valerie Navejas, local businesswoman and longtime friend, to be his campaign treasurer.

“I’ve known Chris all of my life, I know his heart and I see the good job he has done and is doing every day,” Navejas said. “He and Lauren are natural givers and are both committed to the community at a level you don’t see very often.”

After graduating from Texas A&M University, Cannon was elected to the Elgin City Council in 2009, where he served seven years until elected Mayor in 2016. He is now serving his second term in that position.

“This has been a true blessing, living and serving in the town you grew up in,” says Cannon. “You wake up one day and all of a sudden you have an 11-year career of doing something you love.”

Some accomplishments as Mayor include: never raising the tax rate; funding and construction of the Elgin Recreation Center; the extension of Lee Dildy Boulevard; a partnership and development agreement with Ascension-Seton that will result in a stand-alone emergency room and micro-hospital; approving platting for over 5,000 homes and securing more than $3,000,000 in cash from those developers to be used in the expansion of County Line Road and FM 1100.
