Currently at the Elgin Depot Museum is one of the most interesting stories you will ever see: the story of where the enslaved people fled after the Emancipation Proclamation on June 19th, 1869 said they were free to move, stay and plan a new life. The original Emancipation Proclamation was 1865, but Texas was left out of the news.It was overwhelming for so many, and most returned to the community of their roots, now known as the Freedom Colonies.
