Elgin Juneteenth Organization sponsored “Shop with a Cop” on December 21, 2019 at the Walmart in Elgin.

In this event, Elgin police officers were paired with local children and provided a $100 gift card from the Elgin Juneteenth Organization and their sponsors to spend on clothes and toys.

The intent is not just about shopping, but also about building relationships between the kids and Elgin police officers. This is a great opportunity for law enforcement and the community to work together and make some of our Elgin children’s holiday season a little brighter.

Fourteen youth ages 5 to 10 years old were able to shop with a cop. Elgin Juneteenth Organization sponsored five youth. Thank you to our sponsors: NAACP Elgin Branch #6174 (sponsoring one child), Elgin Funeral Home (one child), Backyard Cowboys (two children), Black Men in Business (one child), Mt. Moriah Baptist Church (two children), Dr. Shirley Medlock (one child) and Thompson-Wright Family (one child).

We would like to thank Elgin Walmart, Elgin Police Chief Patrick South, Assistant Chief Phillip Taylor, Elgin Independent School District, and a special thank you to Walmart Employee MeChell, Detective Nicole Acuna, Sergeant Aaron Crim, Trooper Randy Zieschang, Trooper Luke Hudnall, CID Administrative Assistant Sylvia and Telecommunication Specialist Barbara Vega.

If your organization or business would like to partner with Elgin Juneteenth Organization for 2020, please contact Charlotte Thomas at 512-784-9617 or organization president Bettye Lofton at 512-963-2721.
