Historic church celebrates 143 years

On Sunday, Aug. 11, the Paul Quinn African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church held its 143rd anniversary and Pew Rally. The church was founded in Bastrop in 1876 by the Reverend Joe Morgan. In 1886, a cornerstone was laid on Church Street, and the AME church was established as a memorial to Bishop William Paul Quinn. In 1925, the original church property was sold to Bastrop County for the construction of a charity hospital which became known as the F. A. Orgain Memorial Hospital.
