Research has found that it takes five to seven years for students to become proficient in a second language. The optimal time to learn a second language is before adolescence.Elgin ISD’s Two-Way Dual Language program will begin in kindergarten, where students will spend half of their school day in Spanish and half in English. The percentage of instruction will increase as students progress through the program. By second grade, the students receive language arts instruction in both languages. Booker T.
