Ruth Wissen

Ruth Wissen, age 96, of Elgin, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Dec. 19, 2022.

Ruth was born on Nov. 21, 1926, in Lyons, Burleson County, to Christian and Edith Poehl. On Nov. 1, 1947, she married the love of her life, Lambert “Sonny” Wissen, and they had four children.

Ruth was a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church and when she and Sonny moved to Elgin, they became members of Grace Lutheran Church. Ruth was a devoted Christian and a faithful church member. Ruth enjoyed volunteering for Manchaca Optimist Baseball and working the concession stand. She also volunteered at the Elgin Food Pantry. Ruth was a loyal fan of the Elgin softball and volleyball teams. She and Sonny rarely missed a game and would arrive before the buses got there. Ruth’s greatest joy was her family and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Ruth is preceded in death by her parents, Christian and Edith; her husband, Sonny, with whom she spent 72 years of marriage; her daughter, Wanda Wissen; and her siblings, L.D., Raymond, Walter, Ralph, Lydia, Lorene and Irene.

Ruth leaves behind her children, Dale Wissen and wife, Beverly, Glenn Wissen and wife, Karla, and Chris Wissen and wife, Bobbie; her grandchildren, Lisa Hart and husband, Danny, Lacey Wissen, Malinda Wissen, Katie Tipps and husband, Jason, Ashley Grier and husband, Trevor, and Robert Wissen; and her great-grandchildren, Taylor Schronk, Makayla Schronk, James Keogh, Avery Grier, Hunter Grier and Maddox Tipps.

Visitation was held Tuesday, Dec. 27, from 6 to 8 p.m., at Providence-Jones Family Funeral Home. A celebration of Ruth’s Life will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 28, at 10 a.m., at Grace Lutheran Church in Elgin. There will be a reception immediately following. Interment will take place at 1:30 p.m. at Austin Memorial Park Cemetery.

Serving as pall bearers are Brian Cunningham, Brandon Cunningham, Brent Cunningham, Kevin Wissen and Collin Wissen. Honorary pall bearers are Robert Wissen, Jason Tipps and Trevor Grier.

Memorials may be made to Grace Lutheran Church.
