Mickie Dell Dunbar Newstrom, 83, of Elgin, passed away peacefully Monday, Oct. 16, 2023. Born Aug. 24, 1940, at the Butler Brick Yard, she was the daughter of Willie Mae and Mike Dunbar.

Mickie lived a life filled with love, dedication, and cherished connections. She was united in marriage with her loving husband, Glen Newstrom, and together they raised their two children in Elgin. Mickie’s warm and inviting nature meant she never knew a stranger, and she touched the lives of many through her genuine kindness and compassion.

A dedicated state employee, Mickie served her community with pride and commitment for over 30 years before retiring. Her unwavering work ethic and passion for her job were truly admirable. Outside of her professional life, Mickie found joy in visiting with loved ones, indulging in the world of literature, and making cherished memories with her family and friends. Above all else, her heart swelled with love for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who brought immeasurable happiness into her life.

Mickie was preceded in death by her parents, as well as her son, Carl Glen.

She leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories through her surviving family members, including her devoted husband, Glen Newstrom; her son, Bradley (Tina); her daughter-in-law, Eileen; her granddaughters, Amanda (Rick) Sanchez and Ashley Dewitt; and her great-grandsons, Kyle Horelica and Oakley Dewitt. Mickie also leaves behind her dear brothers, Howard, Larry and Gary Dunbar; as well as many adoring nieces, nephews, and friends.

In honor of Mickie memory and her love for reading, the family requests that donations be made to the Elgin Public Library in lieu of flowers.

A visitation was held Wednesday, Oct. 18, at 10 a.m. at Providence-Jones Family Funeral Home, followed by a celebration of life that began at 11 a.m. Interment followed at the Elgin Cemetery.
