The Elgin Lions Club Thrift Store’s partnership in downtown development has been noticed statewide.

Finalists for the 2022 President’s Awards Program were recently announced in Austin. The Elgin Main Street Program released a statement saying it is excited to share that the Elgin Lions Club Thrift Store is a finalist for the 2022 Texas Downtown President’s Awards Program.

For over 30 years, the Texas Downtown sponsored awards program is designed to recognize outstanding projects, places, and people of Texas downtowns. The program features 12 different categories that fall under the headings of design or achievement.

This year, the Texas Downtown Association’s judges panel received a record number of entries. The Elgin Evening Lions Club Thrift Store has been named as finalist in the category of Best Downtown Partner, Under 50k, along with Burleson Farmer’s Market in Burleson.

The Elgin Evening Lions Club Thrift Store has been a mainstay of Main Street in Elgin for 30 years. The store originally opened at 107 N Main St in 1992 and was a total of 2,500 square feet. There was no room for storage and very little room for the stock. In 2001, the Club purchased the building at 108 N. Main St. and more than doubled the size of the store, as well as moving into a building that was historic in nature.

The Lions Club has been an active partner in the Main Street Program since 2001, supporting all community events even when business capacity downtown was half vacant. They have been actively improving and diversifying their window displays for the last seven years. They were one of the inaugural partners for the Sip, Shop, and Stroll that began six years ago. They led the effort to extend business hours on Saturday to 5 p.m. or later, and they have paid and volunteer staff to ensure they are open six days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with late hours on 2nd Thursdays. The store is open to customers Tuesday thru Saturday 10 a.m-5 p.m. and until 8 p.m. on the second Thursday of every month. The store accepts donations only on Mondays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Texas Downtown holds an online competition called People’s Choice through their Facebook page. Residents can vote for the Elgin Lions Club today and help them win for Best Downtown Partner in the 2022 People’s Choice Competition at https://www.facebook.com/TexasDowntown/photos/pcb.5667993113258839/56679....
