Elgin shooting under Rangers investigation

A shooting Saturday night in Elgin has led to an investigation by the Texas Rangers.
According to a report by KXAN, a Travis County Deputy was involved in a shooting that left the suspect dead.
Elgin Police Department and Travis County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene on Bexar Forrest Cove. The suspect was identified as Rito Morales, a former state trooper and former firearms instructor. Reports said the suspect allegedly had a gun pointed at his head.
Travis County Sheriff Sally Hernandez confirmed that the suspect is dead and said, “this is a tragedy for everyone involved.”
The investigation is ongoing.

UPDATE: There were three fatalities in the incident. Rito Paul Morales, Kristin Morales and Randi Mitchell were named by DPS as among the deceased. More information will be in the Sept. 21 edition of the Elgin Courier.
